Gift giving during Christmas has started way back in the 4th Century when Romans celebrate the Saturnalia, the feast of the sun god Ra. Although there are other accounts of its beginnings such as the wise men tradition giving gifts to persons of notoriety such as the three kings sending gifts to the newly born Jesus. The former account of gift giving resulted to the temporary banning of this practice during the middle ages due to the belief that such was developed out of pagan worship.

However, the Church ratiocinated its continuance by way of relating the act of gift giving with St. Nicholas, also known as Santa Claus. Contemporarily, yuletide season is closely identified with exchanges of presents. From classmates, friends, office mates, and family, exchanging of presents has been widely practiced.

During Christmas season, retailers and merchandisers benefit from the significant spike of sales due to customers buying tokens and other stuff for the gift giving. Others complain of this act as too much commercialization of what is supposed to be a religious celebration of the birth of Jesus, the Son of God. Moreover, they argue that this practice of exchanging presents unfairly excludes the less fortunate such feature of Christmas. But these allegations do not squarely understand the idea of such practice. They only focus and put too much weight on the economic value of the thing given but does not look for the social and personal value of such altruistic act. There are more in gift giving other than the economic value attached to the objects given.

Admittedly though, for most people, gifts are measured according to its monetary worth, but this does not necessary mean that expensive gifts are better than those personally made. Yes, you can give gifts you personally made or created. In this way, you do not only save money but truth be told, the receiver would even appreciate it more if the gift you gave him or her has your personal touch. In preparing of the gift, one should first know the likes and interests of the person to whom it shall be given.

Moreover, if you desire to make or create your own gift, please make sure that such is of quality and style such that although it may not be as expensive as those bought from malls or gift shops, they are at par in terms of design and durability. The real worth or value of the gift is not its price but the effort and sincerity of the giver to come up with such delightful present.

Christmas celebration is too difficult to celebrate now without giving of gifts. But more than these material offerings is the gift of time and opportunity for the families and loved ones to be together in merry making and celebration. Indeed, the best Christmas gifts are those that give joy and make the person smile even after the many Christmas have passed. Hence, if you want to give to someone important the a Christmas gift that would certainly be cherished for a lifetime, make sure to put in that gift much love, effort, and sentimental value, regardless of the price.
