There was a time when singlehood was seen as a personality flaw and a weakness. It was in the early colonial times when men and women are not only encouraged but in fact, forced to get married as soon they are legally allowed to. Most took wedding vows as early as fifteen years old.

Bachelors in their late twenties were actually pressured, hunted down and harassed by society to take a wife to marry. Contradictory to current times, singlehood then was not a valid and accepted option. Most of those who resist marriage were taken as loners and hermits. They were not usually accepted and received as they normally would have been if they were married.

In todays society, singlehood is now seen very differently. Some would even say that singlehood is a blessing as many people would actually prefer to stay single because of the benefits they perceive in being one. To mention some, here are a few of the main reasons why single men and women in their late twenties prefer to stay single.

They are in full control of your time. Getting married would definably mean a lot more than having a partner and kids. It definitely takes more than that. In fact, what you are and what you do will always have an impact on your partner and especially on your kids.

Therefore, you would never have full control over your own time again. Your time and activities will now largely depend on your familys needs and wants. Being single would be the opposite. Except probably your parents if you are still living with them, no one other than you would to try to dictate what you do with your time.

They are in full control of your life. Singles are usually very independent and intelligent individuals. Most of them have not been in long-term relationships or have gone through one and now enjoy the playing field. They generally resist being controlled and influenced by someone else.

They still wait for the sign of Mr. Right. A lot of singles in their late twenties are still optimistic about meeting Mr. Right. However, these people are really convinced that Mr. Right does not come easily. This is why most would prefer to wait for that type of romance usually read in romantic novels and fairy tales where two people meet and fall in love in an instant.

They want to experience that kind of feeling. And until such time, they would not settle for anything less. Many of them would heed divine signals from heaven to make sure that they wouldnt miss the moment when they meet the one made for them. They would seem like hopeless romantic but they definitely wont mind waiting till that day comes.

Nowadays, society no longer sees singlehood as a fateful status or a curse. In fact, it is now regarded to as the more practical option to getting married and having a family. Some would say that it is indeed very difficult and not to mention costly and demanding to raise a family. This is primarily why more and more people are opting to maintain and secure their single status.
