2 Tips On How To Make Long Distance Relationships Work

Does distance really make the heart grow fonder, or just more prone to temptation? Now that is something really worth looking into. Despite the numerous tips from books and websites regarding this age-old problem, nothing seems to make the burden of carrying long distance relationships any easier.

With all the new communications at hand, the gaping space between the two parties still plays the major stumbling block for LDRs or long distance relationships. So, is it possible to make LDR work?

The answer is yes… for a time. But how can you sustain such a relationship until the moment you actually get back together again? Here are some less-than-conventional advices you might want to try.

1. Ease off the panic button. He did not call. She was having an old friend over. There was another voice on the line. You do not talk like you used to. To many people undergoing the aforementioned experiences, these panic symptoms as supposedly indications that the LDR is failing.

If you want to know the truth: these panic symptoms simply denote panic – and nothing more. Face it, paranoia sets in when the mind is otherwise unoccupied.

So instead of nagging your partner about your lost moments together, and worrying about what is happening on the other side of the world with your loved one, you might want to continue with your life and ease off the panic button for good.

This does not mean that you love the person less. It just means that your life does not end with the tearful goodbye at the airport. Your partner has learned to love you because you had a life when you were together.

He or she expects you to carry on; the same way your partner expects to carry on with his or her life. Trust your partner enough to afford him or her longer leashes than is necessary. But try to focus also on what is best for you. Live your life. Keep yourself occupied. Trust that better things will be in store for both of you. And yes, quit worrying already.

2. Allow some time apart. It does not matter if you were the one moving away, or your partner is making a new life far away from you. There will always be a period of readjustment.

If the two of you constantly talked on the phone for long periods of time, and then you met up after that to talk some more, this will surely change once one of you moves away. Instead of losing sleep over this, take the breather and just relax.

Adjusting to a new life can be both exciting and frightening. Allow that person and yourself to enjoy the changes. Right now, both of you may be too overwhelmed with the sudden changes that are happening. All you could do right now is to offer each other encouragement.

Once both of you have acclimatized to the changes, things will be better. You will develop new routines to build up your relationship once more. Sometimes, this time apart will yield better communication between the two of you.
